Vietnam does not attract FDI at all costs; experts point out what needs to change.
According to the General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ), in the first nine months of 2026, the total registered foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam reached a record high of US$50.36 billion, an increase of 76.4% compared to the same period in 2025.
Economist Dr. Nguyen Tri Hieu argues that, in addition to the scale of disbursed FDI capital, attention should be paid to the sources of this capital flow, including distinguishing between capital brought into Vietnam by foreign investors and capital mobilized from domestic credit institutions.
According to Mr. Hieu, clarifying the capital structure will help to more fully assess FDI flows and their impact on the economy.
Mr. Hieu noted that FDI enterprises not only invest in manufacturing and processing for export but also participate in many other sectors such as real estate, electricity, and consumer goods. This is a positive trend, contributing to supplementing resources for the economy and promoting the development of various industries.
